UK Energy Minister inspired by coal-mining communities

Communities across Cumnock and Doon Valley were encouraged by the UK’s Energy Minister to invest in a better future and create long term benefits for everyone.

Michael Shanks MP congratulated The 9CC Group on holding their inaugural conference to explore ideas to build a positive legacy for the former coal mining communities. He told more than 100 delegates in Cumnock it was inspiring seeing communities coming together to build something lasting.

In a video message to the event on Building Community Wealth through Strategic Collaboration, he said: “As a boy who grew up in Ayrshire, I know your community well and I also know that Cumnock & Doon Valley has a long proud economic history from farming to weaving to mining but now you’re also standing right at the forefront of Britain’s clean energy future.

“The windfarms across this region are an investment in a better future and an opportunity to create real long-term benefits for everyone who lives here.”

His Royal Highness King Charles also added his support through a letter delivered by the Vice Lord Lieutenant for Ayrshire William Stafford. The King said he was well aware of the work of The 9CC Group and their potential impact improving the quality of life for residents and limitless opportunities for future generations.

The conference at the Dumfries Arms hotel was organised by The 9CC Group, the charitable organisation managing and distributing community benefit for all nine communities of Auchinleck; Cumnock; Netherthird; Cronberry, Logan & Lugar; New Cumnock; Dalmellington; Patna; Drongan, Rankinston & Stair; and Ochiltree & Skares.

Mr Shanks MP said: “Clean energy only works if we bring people with us. Communities hosting this vital infrastructure should benefit directly from it and

The 9CC Group shows what’s possible when developers and communities work together properly developing transparent benefit funds that reflect local needs and create genuine legacy.”

He added that the 9CC was leading the way in setting high standards, adding that local priorities should be decided locally. He added: “This is about communities feeling like they have a genuine stake in the energy transition rather than something being imposed on them. Let’s make sure that Cumnock & Doon Valley get the absolute maximum benefit from this vital transition while raising the bar for community benefits right across the country.”

Numerous windfarm developers and community organisations were in a attendance to hear presentations from Strathclyde University Professor Matt Hannon, 9CCG chief operating officer Stephen McCarron and a panel session discussion on strategic priorities for creating a lasting legacy.

Mr McCarron said: “To have such powerful and supportive messages from HRH King Charles and the UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks was an enormous boost for all those working so hard together to create a lasting legacy for all our communities. The message was clear to developers and communities – by uniting collectively around a shared vision Cumnock and Doon Valley can achieve so much more.”
