A FURTHER boost to apprentices in the Cumnock and Doon Valley area has been taken forward thanks to wind farm benefits.

A pioneering five-year project to fund apprenticeships in Cumnock and Doon Valley has been backed by the 9CC Group, and will support the employment of 150 new apprenticeships for local young people.

The latest Strategic Area Fund for Apprenticeships was approved by all nine communities represented by The 9CC Group: Auchinleck; Cumnock; Dalmellington; Drongan, Rankinston and Stair; Logan, Lugar and Cronberry; New Cumnock; Netherthird; Ochiltree and Skares; and Patna.

Rae Smith, secretary of The 9CC Group said: “Creating opportunities for young people is a key part of our strategic vision to deliver a lasting legacy for our communities and we are delighted to be investing in the future of local school leavers by giving them meaningful employment and the skillset for lifelong careers.

"(Community benefit) is also a perfect example of the value of collaborative and collective approach to delivering funds.

"This has allowed us to invest in a project which benefits people in all nine communities rather than taking a unilateral decision where funds are restricted to one area to the exclusion of neighbouring communities.”

Around £250,000 has been budgeted for each of the five years to financially support local businesses with their apprenticeship recruitment and employment costs.

Non-executive trustees of the 9CC Group, councillors Linda Mabon, Jim McMahon and Drew Filson, issued a collective statement saying: “We are delighted to see further, strong investment in apprenticeships and our young people.

“The project offers real, hands-on opportunities that help people earn, learn and build a future at the same time, while giving local employers the skilled workforce they need.

“This investment shows a genuine commitment to developing talent locally in an area that badly needs it and supporting our communities in a practical, meaningful way, and that’s something well worth celebrating.”
